It’s another beautiful day in Colorado and the mountains are practically screaming your name. 

Mt. Yale, located in the San Isabel National Forest is a beautiful day hike for those looking for a medium length trail with steep elevation gain and stunning views. 

Start early, stay hydrated, and make sure you look at weather reports! Always recreate responsibly and know where your limits are! 


Mt Yale - 14,200 ft

Wake up early, check the weather for Mt. Yale to ensure safe hiking. Prep layers, gear, and hydration for a high-altitude adventure above the tree line.

• Since you’re going to be above tree line be sure to know the weather you’re expecting. You don’t want to be stranded in a lightning storm!

💪 Pro tips
• Bring layers! While it might be warm at the base of the mountain, the windy and exposed conditions might bring colder temperatures. Beanies, hats, wind breakers, tons of water, headlamps, and sunglasses are all encouraged! Ok

Wake Up - Check the weather again

Arrive early at Denny Creek Trailhead to secure parking and start your hike up Mt. Yale; restrooms are available, but fill your water beforehand.

• Figure out which route you’re hiking!

💪 Pro tips
• If you start at the Denny Creek trail head there is a small parking lot that might fill up fast. There are toilets at the trail head but I did not see water filling stations, so fill up before you head out.

Enjoy sweeping mountain views from Mt. Yale's summit—snap a photo with the iconic rock marker and soak up your accomplishment. Remember: leave no trace!

There’s not a sign or elevation marker at the top, but someone has written on a small rock with Sharpie for pictures. If you bring your own sign up, please please please pack it out with you! Leave no trace!

After your Mt. Yale hike, head to Leadville for a delicious milkshake or some well-deserved food to celebrate your adventure.

you can expect this 8.9 mile hike to deliver on

all of the elevation gain that you're looking for.

you should expect to start early and try to get

off the mountain before any afternoon weather rolls through.

Always remember to recreate responsibly and know what your limits are.
