Visit the George Washington Masonic National Memorial

Explore Alexandria's storied port history at the Lyceum through artifacts, photography, and dioramas inside a beautiful Greek Revival building.

• If you drove, move your car from the memorial to the museum's free parking lot. Or, take the free King Street trolley between the metro station and City Hall/Market Square. The rest of the sites are best accessed on foot.

Visit Alexandria's History Museum at the Lyceum

Step back in time at the Friendship Firehouse Museum and explore historic firefighting equipment from Alexandria’s first volunteer fire company. Only open one Saturday a month.

• For some reason this museum didn’t show up on the physical brochure, but it does on the website and the docents will accept it.

Explore an enchanting 1800s apothecary, brimming with preserved potions and medicinal artifacts. Guided tours (included) allow access to the magical upstairs rooms.

Visit the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum

Explore two historic buildings at Gadsby's Tavern Museum, the 1785 Georgian Tavern and the 1792 City Tavern and Hotel, once frequented by America's founding fathers.

Take a guided tour of Carlyle House Historic Park, an elegant historic mansion with lovely gardens, once a meeting place for colonial leaders.

Eat at one of the restaurants on Old Town Alexandria's Waterfront

I found a great deal to play tourist in Alexandria for a day trip.

you get access to 9 beautifully preserved historic sites around the city.

Pick what interests you and set aside a day to explore.

Start at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial,

which has an observation deck from where you

can survey the city you're about to traverse.

This little known neoclassical shrine is apparently inspired by the lighthouse

we're going to knock out 6 museums downtown,

which is the nation's 3rd oldest historic district.

First of these is Alexandria's History Museum.

The Friendship Firehouse Museum is nearby,

so head over to check out their firefighting antiques.

This was the city's first volunteer fire company

and my first time at a firefighting museum,

Then visit the Stabler Leadbeater Apothecary stocked full with potions.

This was the most whimsical museum of the day.

All 5 of the nation's first presidents spent time at Gadsby's Tavern—

This was really the hot spot back in the day.

another gathering place for some founding fathers.

I thought I’ve done everything in DC, but then I was invited to see a 15-ton cloud and it is truly unlike anything I’ve ever seen in my life.
