Go on an easy local-favorite hike that ends with a little waterfall, swimming hole, and confluence with the Potomac River.

Enjoy an easy, shady hike at Scott’s Run Nature Preserve, leading to a small waterfall and swimming spot in the Potomac River—perfect for a summer day escape.

• AllTrails: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/virginia/woodland-and-river-trail-loop. This 2.5mile loop trail we took works in both directions. You can also just do an out and back along Scott’s Run, or make a bigger loop around the perimeter of the park.
• There are two entrances into the preserve off of Georgetown Pike. Both have small parking lots and trailheads that lead into the park. Recommend the western one across Swink’s Mill Rd and along the stream, but park at the eastern one if no room.
• The park is open from one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset.
• The trails are open year-round. Though you can’t get in the water during spring, you get wildflowers instead: trailing arbutus, Virginia bluebells, and sessile trillium.
• Wear water shoes/clothes.
• DO be careful when wading out! The river water is murky and goes chest deep in some places.
• There are fireflies 💡
• Believe it or not, Scott's Run, the main creek that runs through the park, begins directly below the parking lots of Tyson’s Shopping Center.

Alternate route: If you kayak, Scott's Run Falls is river right on the way down the Potomac. Angler's lot to Carderock is a fun little run with Class I and barely-Class-II rapids. If you take out a little farther downstream at Lock 10, past the American Legion Memorial Bridge, you get to ride the wave train of Stubblefield Falls!

Hike at Scott’s Run Nature Preserve

Here's the perfect opportunity to touch some nature

while staying cool on a hot summer's day.

You'll follow an easy shaded trail to the banks of the Potomac and

be rewarded with a charming little waterfall that feeds right into the river.

Escape just a few minutes out of DC to Scott’s Run Nature Preserve.

Park off Georgetown Pike and head into the Stream Valley Park.

There's tree coverage over the entire preserve.

Along the trail you'll pass fun waypoints

like this cliff overlook and a walk beside the Potomac, gorgeous during golden hour.

The water feels amazing when it's hot out.

If you wade out a little into the Potomac,

you've got a great spot to watch the sunset and end your day.
